With Mother’s Day fast approaching, we’d like to talk about some of the challenges in becoming a parent. One of the most symbolic tasks facing future moms and dads is finding the perfect name. But here’s the thing: in an age of multiculturalism, it’s hard to find a name that’s pleasing to the ear across several languages.
Despite being proper nouns, a given name can be translated from a source language to a target language. This translation is usually only possible in for language pairs that share a bit of etymology (e.g. French and Spanish are both Romance languages), or a cultural aspect (the languages of the texts of the three monotheistic religions share the same characters’ names).
